Udong & The Orphanage
We shared a tuk-tuk with Marius & Xania to Udong Mountain (Udong was the former capital of Cambodia – after Angkor, but before Phnom Penh). We climbed up 500 or so steps to the top, and had great views over the flooded fields of Cambodia. The end of “wet season” is just approaching, and the fields are totally underwater – really makes it look quite pretty.
The funny thing was we were followed by five young boys who wanted to “fan” us all the way up! They were obviously hoping for some money, and we did give them some at the end, but they spoke good English and were really quite sweet :) After spending some time wondering around the Wats and Buddhist temples at the top, we walked down and enjoyed the tuk-tuk ride back. It’s such a nice and relaxed way to travel about, while enjoying the scenery of the surrounding area...
In the evening the four of us went to an orphanage (encouraged by Juan from the Lazy Gecko, who is quite involved with it) and watched the kids perform a cultural show for us – traditional dancing in Cambodian costumes, and music. It was lovely. The children were adorable and so happy to see and entertain us - it was really fun to watch, and we all played games and chatted to them afterwards.
