Lake Matheson, Franz Josef

We went to Lake Matheson the first evening after checking into a motel at Fox Glacier…just incase it was raining in the morning! We walked around to the viewpoint through vegetation resembling rainforest for a brief look at the lake before dinner.

The next morning the weather was superb so we went back for better views! I biked there and met mum to run around to Reflection Point, while dad set off on my bike towards Gillespies Beach! Fantastic views towards Mt. Cook and Tasman, and beautiful reflections on Lake Matheson.

We took loads of photos and mum tried out their new video camcorder (early Christmas present!)

To replace the unsuccessful balloon flight we decided to take a helicopter flight over the glaciers so signed up after driving to Franz Josef Glacier. We looked around the visitor centre and did the glacier valley walk which were both interesting. The flight was booked for 2pm but unfortunately (again) at 1:30pm the weather started to cloud over and the flight was cancelled. That was pretty disappointing - I was quite excited to fly over Cook & Tasman, especially because we’re planning to hike the Copland Pass.

We had a long drive after that to meet the others (Patrick, Marcel & Emily) in Motueka for a hike planned at Mt. Arthur planned the next day – no time for rest!
