Caernarvon Gorge

More pics...!

The overview...

We drove a long way inland after Fraser Island to get to Caernarvon Gorge...staying in Gympie the night after leaving Rainbow Beach, then droving north from there to Gladstone the next day. We went to see Charlie & The Chocolate Factory (pretty good, brought back memories!) and then stayed near Biloela that night.

We arrived at Caernarvon Gorge late afternoon on the 3rd, and walked up Boolimba Bluff for some great views over the gorge. We explored Mickey's Creek and Baloon Cave before dark and found a good camp spot just outside the N.P. boundary!

In the morning we set off along the lower gorge walk - just under 10km, with a few extra side trips! Moss Garden, Hellhole Gorge & Ward's Canyon were all interesting spots, and the art gallery and cathedral cave were fascinating. Aborginal art was painted in ochre (red, yellow & white) and carved in the cave walls, with some interpretations of the drawings described alongside.

On reaching the end of the gorge, I climbed up Battleship Spur (a good hike & scramble in several places!) - really rewarding views from the top. I ran back along the lower gorge to meet PD at the info centre, where we managed to get showers for $1 (I know...this seems to be a major focus of several blog entries!) and then started to drive north once more.

It was a great place though, and well worth the long drive.
