The overview...

The Tri-Hard Trilogy (myself, Jana & Clare) did pretty well in the Christchurch Triathlon on Saturday! It was a really fun event, great atmosphere, and nearly 800 competitors, so finishing second place in the open women's team category was an added bonus! It started at 8am at the Cathedral Square, and I ran the 17km course over to Lyttleton. The first 7km were on flat road, followed by a steep uphill section into the Port Hills (Rapaki Track). We then continued to climb gradually, on a narrow trail with undulations through the Port Hills (Crater Rim Walkway), before a very steep downhill (via the Bridle Path) into Lyttleton. Jana then took over for the 30km road cycle, which went back uphill via Evans Pass and over into Sumner. It wound around to Kerr's Ridge where Clare finished off the course with an 8km upstream kayak (on the Avon River) back to Victoria Square. Our total time of 2 hrs 58 mins was quite a good effort (although I say so myself!)

I was really pleased with my individual run time as well, which was 1 hr 9 mins. I was actually the fastest women, which is kind of cool! I was wondering why the TV helicopter was hovering by me three separate times on the way up Rapaki - I should have made more of an effort to smile for the camera!

There were a couple of very memorable parts to the race - the first being a lone bagpiper at the highest point on the crater rim that we ran. It was an overcast and misty day, so at some sections on top we couldn't see more than about 25 metres. Hearing the bagpipes while running in an area that strongly resembled the Highlands was quite inspirational! Another really fun part was watching the supporters at one section of the kayak course - there is a shallow part with a strong current, where support crew are allowed to jump in and pull the kayaker upstream for a short distance. People were racing through the river with ropes attached to the front of kayaks, hauling their team-mates upstream and getting soaked in the process!

The atmosphere for the entire event was brilliant - everybody was supporting each other, cheering and clapping along the course, which makes an incredible difference and really encourages all the participants. We thoroughly enjoyed it and are quite proud of ourselves!
