Doc Let
We caught an overnight bus from Ho Chi Minh to Nha Trang which wasn't too bad. Managed to get a little bit of sleep and we only had one real stop, so didn't have to worry about the bags too much either :)
After checking into a guesthouse, I convinced PD (fairly easily :)) that we could rent a motorbike for the day. Nha Trang itself sounds really touristy, and as the weather didn't look that great we didn't think a boat trip to the islands or snorkelling would be worth it. We'd heard Doc Let Beach was a quieter stretch about 50km north of NT, so thought we'd head up there and check it out. For $3 we rented a bike, paid a little extra for helmets (the locals don't seem to bother), then had a 2-minute round-the-block introduction to motorbikes, and off we went. Don't worry mum, it really is quite easy!
It's a very pleasant way to travel - cruising along the coast by ourselves on a fairly quiet road (most of the way). The only thing we really had to learn was to beep the horn as much as possible, just to warn other people that you're there. Oh, and if a bigger vehicle beeps its horn, it basically means "I'm bigger than you, get out of my way". It seemed wise to agree in that case.
The beach was nice, and definitely fairly quiet, but we got a bit of hassle from locals trying to cook us some fresh seafood. In the end we agreed to get some crab, shrimp, and clams (we think!) and it really was excellent. Unfortunately it started to pelt with rain after I'd gone for a walk along the beach...I got soaked! Oh well...at least it was still warm. It wasn't going to stop in the near future, so we didn't have much choice but to ride back extremely carefully on the bike, and stopped half-way at a random side-of-the-road cafe. I was pretty cold by this time, but this sweet couple made us a hot drink and let us warm our hands over the stove! We also bought a couple of pink ponchos from them - a bit too late, but better than nothing...looking good!!
We got a bit lost on the way back into Nha Trang, but in the end made it back to th guesthouse in one piece. It really was a fun adventure.
