Great Ocean Road
Met up with Linda on Monday afternoon after picking up the campervan that PD and I have booked for our trip. It’s COOL! We set off that afternoon heading SW to start touring the Great Ocean Road. We found a camping spot really near Bells Beach, and cracked open the bottle of Bombay to celebrate the start of our holiday! Waking up to kangaroos in a paddock next to us was definitely a “Welcome to Australia” sign for me.
The coastline is superb and we had fantastic weather the whole way round which was really lucky. Taking in Bells Beach, Teddy’s Lookout (Lorne), Apollo Bay, and Shelly Beach the first day, we found another great place to camp near Port Campbell. We saw koalas from 5m away, more kangaroos and some gorgeous parrot-like birds. Both of us had a run along the Great Ocean Walk trail from Apollo Bay to Shelley Beach picnic area which was lovely, then gate-crashed the campground facilities for a shower :)
Day 2 took in the Great Apostles, only 11 instead of 12 as one has fallen over! Loch Ard Gorge was really impressive and we did some runs/walks around all the trails there. There are so many great spots to see – Razorback, London Bridge, The Grotto, plus many other sea caves and arches. We reached Warrnambool and ran along the coast to the whale-watching platform. We could see the whales playing really close to the beach, but wished I had a better zoom for a good photo! On to Tower Hill (a volcano which you can drive inside and around the rim). We got within 5m of some very friendly kangaroos and koalas, and a group of lorikeets (really colourful birds) flew right by us! We also saw some emu. The visitor centre had some beautifully hand-made gifts which was also pretty interesting. We stopped at the Irish pub in a small Irish settlement nearby, and then headed on to find another camping spot near Dunkeld (southern Grampians).
