Birthday week of surprises

YORK

Richard decided he'd plan a fun weekend away just before my birthday, and I had no idea where. I wasn't sure what to take (just that no bike or hiking shoes would be needed!), how we would travel, or where we were staying... even the taxi picking me up wasn't what I was expecting, so when we turned into the train station I just started laughing – I'd definitely been on the wrong tracks (literally). I figured out we were heading to York once we were on the train...

We had a really nice touristy weekend with lots of sight-seeing– Clifford Tower, York Minster, Jorvik Museum, National Railway Museum, Barley Hall, the Shambles, walking on the city walls – and plenty sampling of the local food & wine (a mutually agreed essential part of visiting any new city). Thomas the Tank Engine was obviously one of the major highlights ;)

My birthday seemed to start there and continue throughout the entire week – on Thursday mum & dad were taking Richard & I out for the evening. My first (and fairly confident) guess was meeting in town for an early meal and then going to see Sound of Music. When got on a bus towards town and got off near Haymarket I was still confident... when we walked into the train station I was totally confused. When we boarded the Kirkcaldy train i thought we must be travelling in a relaxed style to mum & dad's, but when we got off at North Queensferry I just stopped trying to guess. We had a fantastic meal at 'The Wee Restaurant' underneath the Bridges, and a really nice evening catching up with mum & dad. On the train back, Richard asked what else would complete my birthday and I suggested cocktails and/or live music. After a very plush cocktail at the Balmoral (not our usual drop-in after work kind of place), we finished off the evening listening to live music at a pub on the Royal Mile. It was a brilliant birthday!

On Friday a group of us went bowling – still don't know how I could possibly win one of the games with a score of 82, but it summarizes everyone's bowling standard especially after a few drinks. On Saturday we went for a walk in the Pentlands with the last of the snow still hanging about on the tops – Richard, me, Jo, Helen, & random Dave. A spot of bird-watching and some ice-skating on the reservoir ;)
